San Francisco, the city of costumes
They say “first impressions pass through the eye“. That’s exactly what happened arriving in SF. It was “love at first sight“. Thankfully we do not only fall in love with people, but also places, moments, feelings and insights. The first thing I noticed arriving in San Francisco were the palms. Palm trees everywhere. Don’t they remind you of pink flamingos, blue Cadillac and red 70s sunglasses? That’s how you fell in love.
Dominated by gulls, you indeed arrive in a colorful city! Houses, trees, illuminated signs, cupcakes, roads, colorful stores. They keep a little bit of hippies for sure in this town! People are smily and polite. Even away from home, the right people will make you feel part of their family. Everyday life includes going kids to school, eating waffles with Maple Syrup, walk the dog and watch American series or Oscars on TV. In Walgreen, coffee shops, all around people always ask how are you today, as if you knew each other a long time. Gradually you become accustom and smile as well.
Sure, you may call them a little crazy. Walking around in uniforms, topless dressed Santa Claus, playing drums in the street dressed as clowns or something outrageously funny. Yesterday night returning home, on the bus next to me sat a fox! Yes, a Fox.
They climb uphill with bikes! They stuck furniture on the walls outside an abandoned building so as it looks like they jump from the window. In the city center someone had the idea of some huge building that looks like a jukebox. And yes, it is a church! Imagine that!
Next to the Union Square trees, plugs spring out from the soil to charge your iPod. On the pavement you will find small tags with crabs(!) and at crossroads large green signs with street names, pop-up canteens serving food and at almost every corner street clothes or other objects hanging selling everything. Wandering around the neighborhoods, at moments I feel like “Alice in the colorland“. And if you ever get to know me, you’ll understand how special is San Francisco for me to say so! Walking down the Hayes Valley, somewhere between the trees, out of nowhere, there stands a tree with all its branches painted pink. This is San Francisco. Lovable at first sight!
