Either Alonnisos or Alonissos, if you live inItaly, Germany or Belgium, now Ryan makes it easier (and cheaper!) than ever to access the island flying directly to Volos and taking the ferry that will get you to the Sporades’ island complex. Here’s a list we compiled after visiting the island this August.
Where #eat (and #what!):
Tassia’s (Steni Vala): Lobster pasta. Like, the Best.Ever.Made.
Greece is famous for its tsipouro, raki, tsikoudia and the rest high volume alcoholic beverages! The best place to enjoy “meze” and drink local distilled spirits is “Thodora’s” place. Located in Chora, you’ll know you’ve arrived when you see those traditional green tables surrounding you:
Where #drink:
Drunk Seal: Its fruit cocktails in jar glasses are the reason I bought a cocktail mixer at home and got myself a local delicacy; the notorious marmalade of Alonnisos. Oh, and now I’m looking for totem mugs like the ones they serve their boozes in. And check out the view and the interior design. Let alone the music; this place is an inspiration itself!
Another great spot (located in “Palio Chorio/Old Village”) is “Piperi“! Its name means Pepper, its design feels homemade and cozy while it offer a great variety of smoothies, juices and some excellent brunch options:
Where #dive:
Seals is not the only attraction the island has to offer its visitors. We’d advise you either rent a car and go beach hopping or…no visiting the island at all! 🙂 True, it’s only worthy if you’re able to move around and hop from beach to beach. This way you’ll get to see everything. It’s a lot. To name a few: Steni Vala, Agios Dimitrios, Votsi, Chrissi Milia, Glyfa, Tzortzi Gialos, Rousoum Gialos, Marpounta, Kokkinokastro, Megali Ammos, Megalos Mourtias, Milia, Vythisma, Spartines. (And you thought this post was about some rather common island!) Take a look:
Where #stay (and how long):
We stayed at the harbor but I feel it’s best one stays at the Old Village which is rather picturesque and live after 6 p.m. Full of taverns, tiny boutiques and bars and great view! You’ll definitely need 4 days time to get around the whole island. If you’re able to spend more, pay a visit to our fave Skopelos just an hour away on ferry.
What #see:
Remember to visit the National Marine Park and the Pirates’ Museum (that’s in the Harbor).
So for your summer ’15 planning, I guess now you know the answer. Destination: Alonissos!
